Phone Water Damage in Glasgow: What to Do in the First 10 Minutes
Dropped your phone in the sink, toilet, or a puddle? What you do in the next 10 minutes matters more than anything else. Follow these steps exactly — they can be the difference between a saved phone and a dead one.
Step 1: Get It Out and Turn It OFF
Power the phone off immediately — hold the power button and shut it down. Don’t test whether it still works. Electricity flowing through wet circuits is what causes the real damage: short circuits and corrosion that spread by the minute.
Step 2: Remove Case, SIM, and Accessories
Take off the case, pop out the SIM tray, unplug any cables or headphones. This lets trapped water drain out and allows air to circulate around the openings.

Step 3: Dry the Outside — Gently
Pat the phone dry with a soft cloth or tissue, paying attention to ports and speaker grilles. Important don’ts:
- Don’t shake the phone — shaking spreads water deeper inside
- Don’t use a hair dryer on hot — heat damages components and pushes moisture further in (cool air from a distance is okay)
- Don’t blow into the ports — your breath contains moisture
Step 4: DON’T Do These Things
- Don’t charge it — charging a wet phone is the fastest way to fry the charging circuit and battery
- Don’t put it in rice — this myth has been debunked. Rice dust gets inside the phone through the ports, and rice absorbs moisture far too slowly to help. Silica gel packets are better, but neither replaces professional cleaning
- Don’t keep using it “to see if it’s fine” — corrosion begins within hours and keeps spreading for days. A phone that “seems okay” on day one can die on day five
Step 5: Bring It to a Repair Shop ASAP
This is the step that actually saves phones. A technician will:
- Open the device safely
- Disconnect the battery (stops ongoing electrical damage)
- Clean the logic board with professional ultrasonic cleaning
- Treat any corrosion on connectors and chips
- Test every function before handing it back
Same-day treatment makes a massive difference. A phone brought in within hours has a far better survival rate than one left in a drawer for a week “drying out.”
What About “Waterproof” Phones?
IP67/IP68 ratings are tested in lab conditions with clean, still water — not toilets, pools (chlorine), or the sea (salt). The seals also degrade over time with drops, heat, and age. Treat every water incident as an emergency, regardless of the rating.
